Lesson Title: Molecular Orbitals

State Standards: (GLEs/GSEs)
GSE - PS1 (9-11) - 4

National Standards:

Context of Lesson:
This lesson will be done after a lesson on molecular orbitals. In this lesson the students will be performing an inquiry task on molecular geometry.

Materials:

Objectives: (for the completion of the 2 day lesson on molecular geometry)
  • The students will determine the molecular geometry of compounds.
  • The students will explain why compounds are shaped the way they are using VESPR theory.

Instruction:
Opening:
  • Explain the inquiry activity to the students.
    • Using what they already know about molecules the students will be figuring out what possible shapes molecules can form and why they form the way they do.
      • Hand out supplies, ball and stick models to experiment with and a worksheet with a few questions that should be answered by the end of the class.

Engagement:
  • Students will be working on the inquiry activity.
    • I will go around to the groups asking questions and trying to guide them through the activity.
    • There will be a little bit of structure because of the worksheet that the students will complete.

Closure:
  • Collect the materials.
  • Ask the students about the activity.
    • What did you learn?
      • Is it different from what you thought?
    • Is there anything that was confusing?
  • Explain that in tomorrow’s class we will be learning more about molecular geometry.

Assessment:
I will formatively assess my students with the worksheet that will be completed during the inquiry activity. This worksheet will give me an idea of what the students are thinking so that when I teach about molecular geometry in the next class I will know what my students are struggling with and can concentrate on those aspects of molecular geometry.
